THREE school friends from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn who call themselves Team Lighting will travel to the World Festival at St Louis in America next month with their robotic creation having won the Best in Wales competition.
Edward Upton, Joseph Stadius and Ben Dodd have been invited to take part in the international competition known as First Lego League – Animal Allies, and Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn is believed to be the first school ever in Wales to have been invited.
Since November, every lunch break as well as holidays have been spent designing their robotic Lego creation that they have named Thor.
With less than a month to go before they represent Wales in America, they have a few tweaks left to do, but are confident they will return home with a good placing after spending over 1,000 hours on the robot.
Edward said: “This is our third year of taking part in the competition. In our first year we won the project at regional level. Our second year saw us winning our robot design, and this year we’ve won the project and had a first for our robot design.”
The finals of the UK competition, held last month in Bristol, saw 48 teams competing against Team Lighting.
They will be the first ever from Wales to represent their country in the finals where 108 teams from across the globe will battle it out for the winning prize.
