Pupils across Dwyfor and Meirionnydd have been praised for another stellar year of GCSE results.

Amongst those celebrating on Thursday was a 12-year-old who got the equivalent of two A* grades in Russian and Italian. Despite being in Year 7, Oliver Norman gained the qualifications at Ysgol y Moelwyn in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Headteacher Dewi Lake praised pupils and staff at the school for the GCSE results.

“Developing independent skills is essential in order to ensure a successful career,” he said.

“The process of gaining these qualifications clearly exemplifies the level of these skills.

“Many thanks to the school staff for their hard and diligent work, for their  support for pupils and for being so willing to tread the second mile.

“Many thanks to the pupils for your special contribution to the school and the local community during the last five years.

“Congratulations to all on your success. I wish you all the best in the future.”

Dewi Bowen, headteacher at Ysgol Eifionydd, was also full of praise for his pupils, saying: “I wish to congratulate all of our pupils at Ysgol Eifionydd on their GCSE results, we are very proud of their achievements. We wish them the best of luck whether they will be moving on to courses at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, an apprenticeship or a school sixth-form.  We had some excellent results this year with one individual gaining 12A* grades and we are particularly proud of our vocational course results. We would also like to thank the teachers and support staff for their hard work and dedication.”

Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn saw 98 per cent of pupils achieving at least five GCSE equivalent qualifications.

There was particularly pleasing performance in Science, English and Maths, with 84 per cent of pupils achieving GCSE grades A*-C in Science, 66 per cent in English and 64 per cent in Maths.

With the growing national and international emphasis placed on the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification, the school is also delighted that 96 per cent of pupils achieved the standard this year.

Headteacher Helen Lewis said: “The vast majority of the students are to be congratulated on their effort, perseverance and achievement during the past two years and it goes without saying that we wish them all the very best in the next stage of their education or career, and hope that their time at Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn will be remembered fondly, with a team ethos of everyone working towards a common goal – every student achieving to their full potential in every way possible.”

Pupils at Ysgol Ardudwy also celebrated a great set of results.

Headteacher at the Harlech school, Aled Williams, said: “The school is very pleased with the success of all pupils in their GCSE exams and courses.

“I would also like to thank the staff for their work in preparing the pupils throughout the year and to the parents for their support. We wish the pupils well as they move on to further education or take the first step into the world of work.”
