A TRAWSFYNYDD primary school has been judged ‘good’ by inspectors.

Ysgol Gynradd Bro Hedd Wyn was told by Estyn last week that their current performance is ‘good’, with ‘good’ prospects for improvement, meaning the school has “many strengths and no important areas requiring significant improvement”.

The report follows an inspection in February, and comes after the school was placed in the ‘amber’ category in of the Welsh Government’s National School Categorisation System last year, which meant the school would receive up to 15 days of support.

Referring to the school’s current performance, the report praises pupils’ progress in their learning and achievement; pupils’ Welsh oral skills; literacy and numeracy; behaviour and attitude of pupils; attendance; teaching standards; and the “inclusive and homely ethos” created by staff.

And in relation to the prospects for improvement, the report praises the headteacher’s “clear vision”; the teamwork of staff in providing learning opportunities; a “knowledgeable and supportive” governing body; the school’s self-evaluation procedures; and its partnerships with parents and the community.

The report makes four recommendations for improvement, and these are to improve English reading and spelling at key stage two; to improve information technology skills; to ensure teachers provide challenges for children of a higher ability; and to develop the outdoor area for pupils in the foundation phase.
