A student from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s Dolgellau campus has successfully gained a place on the Sutton Trust Summer School Programme.
The programme is a week-long course at a university, designed to give students a taste of university life before attending in September.
Seven students applied from the college but only one was successful, Jac Ison from Friog.
Jac will spend the week in the University of Nottingham, where he will be studying physics, chemistry and astronomy as well as participating in other aspects of university life.
Catrin Roberts, the A-level co-ordinator at the Dolgellau campus, approached a number of students about the programme and those who were interested were directed to the Sutton Trust website to complete an application.
Each student chose the university in their applications and, in this case, Jac chose the University of Nottingham. He was one of just 16 students the university accepted for the course this summer.
Jac intends to go on to study astrophysics, astronomy and planetary science at university next year, but is keeping an open mind as to what he wants to do in the future.
Jac said: “The college has definitely helped me get this spot on the summer school because if Catrin hadn’t asked if I was interested I would never have known about the Sutton Trust. My tutors have also inspired me to try further education in the subject that I am currently studying.”
Grwp Llandrillo Menai, of which Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor is a part, encourages its learners to reach their full potential with external extra-curricular activities and opportunities, the college said.
