A budding fashion designer from Lampeter has been recognised for her outstanding entry at the 2018 WJEC Innovation Awards ceremony at the Senedd in Cardiff.

Lisa Evans, a 16-year-old GCSE student from Ysgol Bro Pedr, won the GCSE prize for her laser-cut dress, created using her knowledge of design and technology.

The talented teen designed the mini dress herself and used a laser to cut a pattern to create an eye-catching and unusual look.

The Innovation Awards, in partnership with the Welsh Government, recognise the most original project work by WJEC students studying design and technology, with awards for GCSE, AS-level and A-level work.

“I was inspired to create the dress by my own experience of going on holiday and having really limited luggage space,” said Lisa.

“I wanted to make something versatile enough to be worn as a beach cover-up, day-to-day outfit or even to go to a restaurant in the evening.

“I decided to go for a 1960s look, so I researched into styles at the time and designed a dress in a shift shape with a repeating pattern.

“The cut-out design is really key to how versatile the dress is. You can easily dress it up or down, combine different colours and create a completely unique look each time you wear it.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Kirsty Williams, Cabinet secretary for education.

“A huge congratulations to Lisa and all the contenders for their amazing inventions,” she said.

“Wales has a great history of inventors and it’s wonderful to see our young people following in their footsteps.”
