A COMPREHENSIVE school will remain shut until at least the end of April following storm damage.

Ysgol Ardudwy in Harlech was forced to close its doors following storm damage on St David’s Day.

Work on safeguarding Ysgol Ardudwy roofs following significant damage caused during the storms at the beginning of the month is ongoing, but due to problems of scale and the need for specific scaffolding, the school will now be closed until at least 23 April, forcing pupils - some of which have important exams looming - to remain in alternative locations.

A spokesperson for Gwynedd Council said: “The aim is to make the roofs safe in the first place so that the site is safe for pupils and staff to return.

“After the work to make the roofs safe has been carried out, work will then be carried out to re-roof most of the school on an area-by-area basis, with the school open as normal during this work.

“From the outset, everyone has been working towards getting the pupils and staff back on the school site after the Easter holidays, but initial work has identified a need for different, specific, technical solutions in order to be able to erect scaffolding to allow access to certain parts of the buildings.

“This means that it will take longer than originally anticipated to make the roofs safe, and therefore the school building will not re-open to pupils and staff until Monday 23 April.

“The temporary education arrangements put in place for the pupils will continue until the school building reopens.

“During the period while the school has been closed, the pupils have been educated at five different locations in the area and these arrangements have proved very successful.

“The same arrangements will continue during the first two weeks of the Summer Term.”
