A FORMER mobile library vehicle which the council uses to promote “positive waste management behaviours” will cost more than £62,000 to run over five years.

Ceredigion County Council spent £3,405 to convert the former mobile library into a “mobile education unit” for its Caru Ceredigion campaign, which the council said is aimed at reducing environmental issues across the county by educating and raising awareness of residents’ responsibilities.

The figures, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, also show that the council will spend £11,430.65 every year for the next five years on lease-hire charges because the council does not own the vehicle.

The council’s response reveals that the insurance costs for the vehicle in 2016/17 was £337.14, which, if the cost was to remain the same next year, would mean an additional outlay of £1,685.7 over five years, taking the total spend on the vehicle to £62,243.95.

The council said the costs will be covered by a Welsh Government grant.

During the second half of 2016, the vehicle was used to support the waste and recycling team at Aberystwyth Show, Borth Family Fun Day Out, Sea 2 Shore, Young People and Children’s Festival in Aberaeron, and Tregaron Show.

The council’s response added: “It is intended that the vehicle will be used extensively during 2017 which could include for engagement activities and use beyond the waste service.

“All costs associated with the vehicle have been met through a successful application to the Welsh Government’s Environment and Sustainable Development Grant."
