A COUNCILLOR who organised protests against Aberystwyth University to keep Pantycelyn Welsh-language halls open has applied for the top job at the institution.
Jeff Smith, 27, an Aberystwyth town councillor as well as a doctorate student in physics at the university, said that he has applied for the job of vice-chancellor vacated by Prof April McMahon in July.
The institution is currently being led by acting chief Prof John Grattan, with interviews and discussions over a replacement for Prof McMahon to be held this month.
Cllr Smith was a prominent activist during the protests to keep Pantycelyn Hall open – joining in an “occupation” of the building by scaling the roof to unfurl protest banners.
Cllr Smith said: “I am passionate and enthusiastic about the direction and future of the university, and for projects such as the reopening of Pantycelyn Hall.
“I feel that I can bring a lot of ideas and energy to the role, and open a new era of transparency and listening.
“I also want to see the university is doing more to fulfil its historic role to provide learning, language and culture of Wales and its people, giving the firm as the heart of the university of Wales.”
