A school on Pen Llyn has won an award in a competition on S4C to find Wales’ best gardens.

In May, the ‘Wales’ Best Gardens’ competition launched on Garddio a Mwy (Gardening and More).

The winners were announced in the final programme of the series last Monday (6 September).

Ysgol Abererch in Pwllheli won the best school garden category.

“In this series we wanted to see our viewers’ gardens more than ever with many having started gardening for the first time during the lockdowns and several experienced gardeners having taken up growing once more,” said one of the show’s presenters, Meinir Gwilym.

“The standard was incredibly high so it was quite a challenge to judge them.”

But the team of judges – Medwyn Williams, winner of 12 gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show; professional gardener Carol Williams and Instagram star Adam Jones (Adam yn yr Ardd) – succeeded in finding four winners.

Winner of the young gardener category was Heledd Evans of Trewyddel near Aberteifi, whilst Carys Briddon from Tre’r Ddol’s beautiful and colourful garden won the award for best flower garden. Rhian Bambrey from Lampeter won best vegetable garden.

The winner of the best school garden was Ysgol Abererch.

According to Adam who judged this category, the standard of all the school gardens was very high.

“It was obvious that all the projects were linked to education but also that they inspired the children,” he said.

“The willingness to learn in the younger generation is something very positive for the future. I think the future of gardening is in very safe hands.”

“In Ysgol Abererch, they cooked the food they grew and they were gardening all through the year. The just understood that connection between the world of nature and growing vegetables sustainably.”

To find out more about the winners catch up with Monday’s edition of ‘Garddio a Mwy’ on S4C Clic or BBC iPlayer. English sub-titles available.
