UNION chiefs have warned that cuts to school budgets will impact on children’s education as question marks hang over the librarian’s post at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn.

UNISON spoke out after it emerged that – with £3.4m cuts to come this year - governors were proposing to axe the librarian post.

“The removal of librarian will seriously impact on your children’s education ,” said UNISON spokesman Mark Evans.

“The librarian provides advice and guidance to pupils with their reading, homework study and revision skills amongst other things and is not just there to collect and receive books.

“Also the library has a good internet connection that homes in the area don’t have.

“Unfortunately, for many reasons some parents are not able to provide a quiet place or don’t have internet access or space for their children to do their homework.

“The headteacher claims the library is not at risk but what is the point of a library without a librarian who will carry out this important work?"
