A multi-million-pound revamp of a Cardigan school has moved a step closer.

A contractor is set to be appointed to carry out Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi’s £5.8 million improvements.

Following a tendering process, three compliant bids for the 21st Century School band B project to build a three-storey extension and other remodelling work have been received by Ceredigion County Council.

At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, senior councillors were recommended to give approval to accept the preferred bidder and enter into a contract for the project, subject to grant approval from Welsh Government.

A report to the meeting states that work is expected to start on site in July 2021, with completion due the following summer.

The £5.8m budget is spilt 35/65 between the council and Welsh Government 21st Century Schools programme and includes replacing windows, removing temporary classrooms, installing a new energy-efficient boiler and enhancing the existing courtyards.

Other improvements include internal remodelling, a first-floor extension for two science laboratories and another above the music room to create a drama studio.

The three-storey extension will include eight classrooms and three ICT suites.

Full details of the tender evaluation are considered exempt information and not included in the public reports.
