An Aberystwyth secondary school is one of several in Wales which are providing young carers with the help they need to succeed in education, a watchdog has found.

An Estyn report into the provision for young carers at secondary schools, colleges and Pupil Referral Units throughout Wales says that “many providers do not know which of their pupils and learners have a caring role” and that provision “varies widely”.

Ysgol Penglais, however, is one setting singled out for its work with its young carers.

“A group of young carers and staff from Penglais have completed an innovative intervention training programme with local authority staff,” the report released this week said.

“The training provides staff and pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to support the wellbeing needs of young carers.

“The course helps to address the needs of those who have had adverse childhood experiences, including having a caring role.

“The course aims to give carers and those who support them a toolkit to improve their resilience.”

Young carers, under the age of 18, have a range of responsibilities including physical, emotional and personal care, household jobs, looking after siblings, or advocating on behalf of the person being cared for.

“This caring role can have an adverse impact on young carers,” the report found.
