The future of a Llyn primary school will be discussed by Cabinet members amid concern over dwindling pupil numbers.

Despite having a capacity of 53, it’s expected that Ysgol Llanaelhaearn will only have 11 pupils on the books from September.

As a result, a report will be presented to Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet next month asking for permission to hold formal meetings with the governing body to discuss the school’s future.

If approved, a formal report is expected in October which could include the possibility of closure.

A council spokesman confirmed that the school is in a “vulnerable position” due to the school being 79 per cent below capacity, with additional estimates showing that pupil numbers could fall to as low as eight by 2021.

Cllr Cemlyn Williams, the Cabinet member for education, said: “It’s important to emphasise that no decision has been made and that what is happening now is an application to discuss possible options.

“But with very low numbers in the school and projections to decrease further over the next few years, it would be irresponsible for us not to consider the situation.”
