Schools in Aberystwyth and Llanidloes have been named among the top 10 performing state secondary schools in Wales.

Penglais school in Aberystwyth and Llanidloes High School were ranked ninth and 10th respectively in the top performing schools in Wales list, revealed in Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2019, published on Sunday.

The 26th edition of Parent Power identifies the 2,000 highest-­achieving schools in the UK, ranked by their recent examination results.

Penglais was ranked ninth overall in Wales and equal 288th across the UK; 60.1 per cent of A-level results at the school were achieved at grades A*-B, with 27.9 per cent of GCSE results at grades A*/A/9/8/7.

Llanidloes, ranked 10th in Wales and the annual list and 356th in the UK overall, saw 59.4 per cent of A-level results at grades A*-B, with 16.9 per cent of GCSE results at grades A*/A/9/8/7.

Mair Hughes, Penglais headteacher, told the Cambrian News: “We are pleased that Ysgol Penglais is recognised in The Sunday Times Schools Guide which acknowledges the very positive and high standards we seek to attain.

“Staff and students work very hard and students are challenged in their subjects.

“This success enables students to continue in their future studies and employment.”
