A teaching union say they are “surprised by the proposed acceleration” in return of pupils to school announced today.
Following the announcement today that more learners in Years 7, 8 and 9 could be welcomed back to school before Easter, NAHT Cymru director Laura Doel said: “We want nothing more than a safe and sustainable wider return to school and we all share the ambition of bringing in learners as soon as we can.
"We understand the desire to allow learners to meet up with their teachers and in some schools this is already happening.
“But we are surprised by the proposed acceleration before the hard data exists to support it.
"We have not had a full return of Foundation Phase across Wales yet and what we don’t want is to see schools having to close again because we have brought in too many learners too quickly. The public will not forgive a third lockdown.
“The profession stands ready to play its part but the government needs to provide a compelling narrative to reassure parents, carers and communities that their decisions are truly guided by the emerging science.”
However, Welsh Conservative shadow education minister Suzy Davies MS welcomed the move, but added: “It is somewhat regrettable that it has taken this long to provide this information to families but I am pleased opposition pressure has won the day and that more children across Wales will be back in school before Easter.”
Plaid Cymru also welcomed the announcement, but said teachers should be a priority for the Covid vaccine, and it’s important that digital learning is supported for those staying at home for now.
Plaid Cymru shadow minister for education Sian Gwenllian MS said: “If the scientific advice recommends that it is safe for pupils to return to schools, then I’m very pleased to hear this. Nothing beats face to face learning and being in the company of fellow pupils.
“It is however disappointing that school staff have not been considered a priority for vaccination within their individual age groups as a means to make them safer with the return of more pupils.
“It’s also crucial to bear in mind that this is a phased return to school and that many pupils will remain at home; it’s important that digital learning continues to be supported and that pupils have the proper equipment.”
