ABERYSTWYTH town councillors have welcomed the university’s £10m renovation plans for the historic Pantycelyn halls of residence.
The councillors’ comments come after it was revealed in the Cambrian News last month that the Welsh language halls, which were home to Prince Charles during his time as a student in Aberystwyth, could be reopened by September 2019.
The plans, which will see 200 en suite bedrooms, with full catering provision and social spaces, have now been submitted to the county council and the town council has voted to support them.
Cllr Lucy Huws, who is now chair of the town council planning committee, said: “This is a very important application for Aberystwyth, and for the Welsh-speaking community in this town for generations to come.
“The building does need bringing up to date to attract new students, for fire safety and for vibrant community spaces.
“I think it gets the right balance. The university has consulted with student representatives and I would like the town council to give its strong support.”
But one councillor wanted more detail on the materials to be used.
Cllr Talat Chaudhri said: “Are there any details of changes to the entrance? I am aware that we have to use the same principles we apply elsewhere to the doors and windows.
“This is important for the Welsh-speaking community. I just want to be sure about the wood used in the windows."
