BOOKWORMS from the Llyn Peninsula have excelled at a national reading competition.

Schoolchildren from Ysgol Edern have been successful in the final round of the Welsh Books Council’s national reading competition held recently in Aberystwyth.

The literature lovers performed a dramatic presentation of a book, along with discussing a short story that they had read.

Gwynedd was represented in the Year 5 and 6 competition by Ysgol Edern.

There was keen competition for the main prize, the Dr Dewi Davies Shield, but it was the pupils from Ysgol Edern who scooped the top prize again this year.

They also won the prize for best group discussion for talking about Stori’r Brenin Arthur by Siân Lewis.

As part of the national rounds activities the children and teachers had the opportunity to enjoy sessions in the company of Casia William, Children’s Laureate.

Caernarfon’s Ysgol y Gelli’s Year 3 and 4 team also performed admirably at the event in Ceredigion.

Cllr Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council Cabinet member for education said: “It’s a privilege to congratulate two Gwynedd schools for doing so well in this competition again this year.

“Reaching the final stages of any national competition is a fantastic achievement, and to come out on top is a feather in the cap for both pupils and teachers.

“It’s also great to see pupils benefitting so much from reading and discussing books, and to foster their communication skills by taking part in the competition.

“I’d like to thank the council’s Library Services for their constant support with the competition.

“Thank you to everyone who took part, and congratulations to Ysgol y Gelli and Ysgol Edern on their success.”
