A YOUNG activist has been elected as student union president at one of the UK’s top-rated universities.

Rhiannon Jones (pictured), who was raised in the Pwllheli area, stormed the polls in the Lancaster University student union presidential election and will offcially take up the full-time position in September.

The 21-year-old won the election after the first round of counting, with 1,058 votes, ahead of rivals Adam Gardner (196) and Ashley Threadgold (639).

The former Ysgol Bro Plennydd pupil is a second-year biomedical science student and was previously president of Lancaster’s County College, the largest of the university’s nine colleges.

Rhiannon will take a sabbatical from her studies in order to take up the new role, which will see her represent the interests of 13,000 students, before completing her degree.
