WITH a snap General Election being called for 8 June, we took a look back to the campaign trail in 1987.

In what was to be long-standing Ceredigion MP Geraint Howells’ last election win, he stood against his eventual successor in 1992, Plaid Cymru candidate, Cynog Dafis; Owen Williams of the Conservatives; John Davies, Labour and Marilyn Wakefield from the Green Party.

Mr Howells, who had been the MP for Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire North since 1974, won the vote on 11 June, but had to settle for a reduced majority of 4,700.

He received 17,683 votes, with the Conservative candidate, Owen Williams coming second with 12,948 votes, John Davies of Labour third with 8.965 votes, with Cynog Dafis fourth, accumulating 7.848 votes and Marilyn Wakefield of the Greens getting 821 votes.

The turnout in the constituency was a respectable 76 per cent.
