Madam,

I feel that I must reply to Patrick O’Brien’s column on Brexit in the Cambrian News of 26 September.

It is important to remember that Leavers and Remainers are equally passionate about their opinions on this issue. But we need to remember certain facts.

Democracy works effectively and peaceably when everyone accepts the will of the people. Specifically, the will of the majority of the people in every election and referendum.

The EU referendum of 2016 was the largest democratic vote in UK history.

Some 17.4 million or 52 per cent of voters gave a clear instruction to MPs that we should cut off all ties to the European Union and that Leavers knew exactly what they were voting for. A majority of over one million votes is not an insignificant number.

It seems that the Remainer MPs at Westminster have forgotten that they represent their constituents and not themselves. It seems the only way to settle this shambolic mess is to have a General Election.

It must be the first time ever that Opposition parties have declined to have one. You couldn’t make it up.

Yours etc, Sandra Oliver, Trefechan, Aberystwyth
