AN ABERYSTWYTH guest house owner has said he is “embarrassed” by the state of the town and has called on the county council to crack down on irresponsible residents and landlords who leave rubbish out on the wrong day.

John Evans, owner of Yr Hafod Guest House on South Marine Terrace, said he regularly hears comments from his guests about the state of the town’s streets and blames the county council for failing to punish residents who leave their rubbish out for collection on the wrong day, and those who do not use wheelie bins to hold their general waste.

“I’m embarrassed really,” Mr Evans told the Cambrian News this week.

“Some guests, especially those from Germany and Scandinavia, comment on the amount of rubbish on the streets.

“The problem is not collection but people putting rubbish out on the street on the wrong day.

“People are not taking responsibility for their houses or their tenants. Most responsible residents put their rubbish in hard plastic containers.

There is no logic in putting out black bin liners.

“It is not a big problem to solve; it is not like putting a man on Mars. It is an enforcement problem. A lot of these places are houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs).

“There is more to being a landlord than just collecting rent, you have a social responsibility to other residents.”

Mr Evans said he has raised his concerns with his county council representative, Cllr Aled Davies, but the problem has not been sorted out.
