Professional rock engineers have removed a dangerously unstable rock face near Tremadog after serious concerns surrounding its safety for climbers.

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) had previously drawn attention to the 3.5 ton block of unstable rocks and warned climbers not to walk the Shadrach route at Craig Bwlch y Moch in Tremadog, due to risks of it falling.

On Friday, 14 June, after a period of consideration and inspection, the BMC commissioned local company Colin Jones Rock Engineers to cordon off the crag, close the highway, and remove the block “in a controlled and safe manner”.

In a post on their website, the BMC said: “Rock-engineers abseiled down the cliff and using only crow bars and a small car jack removed the blocks with what turned out to be a scarily small amount of force.”

They provided an additional warning surrounding remaining loose rock and debris in the area, telling climbers not to attempt the routes Grim Wall, Meshach, or the remains of Shadrach and the Brothers.
