Aberystwyth Silver Band is celebrating the centenary of its bandroom, and the public is invited to join in.

Hidden among the shops and car parks of Ystwyth Retail Park stands one of Aberystwyth's most enduring musical landmarks.

On 14 November, Aberystwyth Silver Band celebrate the bandroom’s centenary; the building became the band’s home in 1926.

Built by Aberystwyth Borough Council, it gave local musicians a permanent base after years of rehearsing in less suitable premises. Before moving there, they rehearsed in a skating rink near Capel y Morfa, where neighbours regularly complained about the noise.

Over the last century, the building has witnessed generations of rehearsals, concerts, contests, friendships and community events. It has remained a constant presence in the town through changing times, surviving war, redevelopment and the transformation of the surrounding area.

During World War II, the building was requisitioned for military and civil defence use. It was returned to the band after the war.

When Covid restrictions prevented indoor rehearsals, band members rehearsed in the car park next to the bandroom until they were able to return indoors.

Today, the bandroom continues to be used by musicians of all ages and remains at the heart of the band's activities. Many former members who passed through its doors as learners have gone on to enjoy lifelong involvement in music, while new generations continue to make it a vibrant centre of community music-making.

To mark the centenary, Aberystwyth Silver Band will host an event featuring photographs, memorabilia and historical displays celebrating the people, performances and memories that have shaped the building's remarkable story.

The celebration takes place from 11am-2pm on Saturday, 14 November at the bandroom on Ystwyth Retail Park, with presentations taking place at 1pm. Refreshments will be available.

Former members, supporters, friends of the band and anyone interested in the history of Aberystwyth are warmly invited to attend.
