Young railway enthusiasts and budding engineers can step inside the fascinating world of steam locomotives this summer as Aberystwyth’s Vale of Rheidol Railway teams up with bestselling children's author Christopher Vine for a unique hands-on railway experience.

On Wednesday, 26 August, the special Young Engineers Day has been designed to inspire curious minds by bringing engineering, history and adventure to life through a series of interactive experiences behind the scenes at one of Britain's most historic narrow-gauge railways.

Children aged 6-12 will have the rare opportunity to drive a real steam locomotive, discover how steam engines work, explore the railway's engineering workshops and enjoy exclusive access to the Engine Shed Museum, home to one of the country's finest collections of historic narrow-gauge locomotives and rolling stock.

The day also includes a book signing with Christopher Vine, creator of the hugely popular Peter's Railway series, whose 20 books have introduced thousands of children to engineering through the adventures of Peter and Grandpa as they build and operate a railway across their family farm.

“Railways have inspired generations of engineers, inventors and problem solvers, and we hope this event will do exactly the same for today's young visitors,” said Llŷr ap Iolo, Vale of Rheidol Railway Chief Executive.

“Steam locomotives remain remarkable pieces of engineering and there is no substitute for seeing them up close, understanding how they work and, for many children, having the unforgettable opportunity to take the controls of a real engine.

“We're delighted to welcome Christopher Vine to the railway. His books have encouraged countless young people to discover engineering in a fun and accessible way, making him the perfect person to help us inspire the next generation,” he added.
