LLANON-born harpist Catrin Finch confirmed last week that she is undergoing treatment for recently diagnosed Grade 3 breast cancer.

A spokesperson described the 37-year-old mum-of-two’s condition as ‘treatable’, adding that the cancer had been detected early on.

“Catrin is under the care of the excellent NHS team at Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff, who are currently supporting her through her treatment,” continued the statement.

“Catrin has a busy year ahead and she is determined to fulfil as many of her engagements as her treatment will safely allow.

“In light of this, she has taken the decision to postpone her overseas engagements for the next few months, however the majority of her commitments in the UK remain unchanged at this stage.

“Her work is very important to her and will be a significant focus for her during this time.

“Catrin is in good spirits. She is a fit, courageous young woman and she knows that there are many others out there who will identify with her situation.

“She has a very tight team around her and her well-being is absolutely paramount to us.

“We ask that the privacy of Catrin and her family is respected at this time.”

In a message posted on her website, the former Royal harpist said: “I am currently dealing with what Stephen Fry has recently referred to as ‘something rather mischievous’.

“I know that there are many others out there who will identify with my situation either personally or through the experiences of loved ones.

“After careful discussions with my team we have decided to cancel my current overseas engagements, but it is very important to me to keep playing and my music will no doubt help to give me focus over the coming months.

“I am therefore intending to fulfil as many of my UK commitments as my treatment will safely allow, including my forthcoming spring dates with Seckou Keita.

“I will, however, be taking a back seat from posting on social media for the time being, but will be back with you in the near future.

“Our team will continue to post news on Facebook and Twitter to keep you all updated.”

Catrin was the official harpist to the Prince of Wales from 2000 to 2004 and is currently Visiting Professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and the Royal Academy of Music in London.
