FORMER teammates of the late Aberystwyth rugby legend Eifion Gwynne have handed over a cheque for more than £10,000 to put into his memorial fund.

Carmarthen Warriors, considered one of the best rugby sevens teams in the UK and for whom Eifion was a key player, announced in March that the Cronfa Goffa Eifion Gwynne Memorial Fund would be the club’s chosen charity for the year.

The Carmarthen Warriors celebrated what many consider to be their most successful season ever on 21 October, with their second charity dinner and presentation night at the Stradey Park Hotel, Llanelli.

Around 180 guests, including players from all three teams, sponsors and supporters, gathered to listen to guest speaker, former All Blacks captain Zinzan Brooke.

Before the legendary Kiwi took to the stage, Warriors player/coach Wayne Price summarised the season, which started exactly 12 months ago to the week when the team lost one of its most popular veteran players to a tragic accident.

The death of Eifion, known as Gwynni to his friends, a 41-year-old father-of-three who died after being hit by a car in Spain following the funeral of family friend in October, left Aberystwyth in a state of shock.

The tragedy prompted the Warriors to adopt Cronfa Goffa Eifion Gwynne Memorial Fund as their charity for 2017.

Eifion’s close friend Emlyn Jones accepted a cheque from the Warriors for over £10,000 and read a moving message from Eifion’s widow Nia, which was followed by a minute’s applause.
