A TEENAGER has been selected for a prestigious role and to take part in an adventure around the coast of the UK.
Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Gwynedd, Edmund Bailey, has appointed 15-year-old Pwllheli Army Cadet Corporal Rhian Tyne as his Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for 2018.
Rhian will spend a year in the role, receiving a badge to be worn on her uniform at official events, such as civic ceremonies, royal visits, parades and remembrance events.
Pwllheli detachment commander Nigel Davies was also an award recipient, receiving the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Volunteer Service.
In addition to her Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet duties and her involvement in detachment activities, Rhian has been selected to take part in the Lord Dannatt’s Round Britain Challenge, which takes place in August in conjunction with the Jubilee Sailing Trust.
The challenge forms part of the remembrance activities to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
A crew of 48 injured soldiers and 96 cadets will embark on a voyage of remembrance, adventure and personal development as part of the Lord Dannatt’s Round Britain Challenge. The team will sail around Great Britain on board a specially adapted tall ship.
Setting off from London, the ship will visit Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff before ending the voyage in London.
Rhian will be taking part in the final leg from Cardiff to London, and is the only cadet from North Wales to have been selected.
All of the cadets must raise funds towards the cost of the voyage. Rhian will be carrying out various fund-raising activities and organising events to raise awareness of the Jubilee Sailing Trust and Lord Dannatt’s Challenge. Rhian has already raised over half of her £2,00 target. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/rhian-tyne
