Extinction Rebellion will take to the streets of Dolgellau tomorrow (Thursday, 14 November), to protest against two of the town’s banks.
The group say they are protesting against Barclays and HSBC for their participation in creating “an uninhabitable planet”.
Extinction Rebellion said local activists will protest against these banks for their role in the funding of the extraction of more coal, oil and gas.
Recent figures released by the Rainforest Action Network show that Barclays is within the top 10 biggest financers of fossil fuels, with HSBC in the top 20.
Protesters will also be asking customers of either to urge their bank to reinvest in renewable energy like wind and solar.
Bernard Barnes, a member of the Extinction Rebellion group, said they will be providing letters for customers to sign and give to the two banks, “to show that the customers are also against the policy of the bank in this respect”.
Bernard said: “We want to draw attention to the top 10 world banks, Barclays are in that group of banks, supporting the development of fossil fuels and are opening new areas for development.
“What the Green party and Extinction Rebellion are saying is we should now be leaving any exploration behind and, as much as possible, leaving fossil fuels in the ground.”
A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: “We must leave reserves of these fossil fuels in the group if we want to avoid catastrophic climate change.
“We cannot let the short term profiteering of banks leave us with an uninhabitable planet.”
