A DYFFRYN Ardudwy family are feeling chipper after they were reunited with a long-lost family tool.

Housing association Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd has recently completed a £2.3m two-year scheme to improve 111 ‘prefab’ buildings across the county.

The houses, which were built in Gwynedd following the Second World War as part of the Homes Fit for Heroes campaign, have thrown up several surprises during the refurbishment process with the latest finding taking place in Meirionnydd.

At Bryn Awelon, Dyffryn Ardudwy, a special discovery was made by contractors Willmott Dixon whilst carrying out the work on behalf of CCG.

Whilst fitting a new roof, they found an old chisel in the frame which dated back to the early 1950s, when the houses were originally built.

Following the find, further enquiries were made and it was discovered that the houses had been built in the 1950s by family members of one of the residents living in a private house on the estate, Eifiona Jones.

Eifiona has an old picture of the workers outside one of the houses dating back to the middle of the 20th century.

Three of the men in the photo are her uncles; Lewis, Harri and Gruff, and her little sister is also in the photo visiting her uncles with her mother.

Eifiona was fascinated by the discovery.

“I was born and raised at Penrhiw, my father had three brothers who went away and fought in the Second World War,” she said.

“All three of them are in this photo. My father was not called up for service as he had to stay at home to work on the farm.
