The family of a man from Pwllheli who died in a motorcycle crash three years ago has raised £8,500 for the Wales Air Ambulance since he died.

Huw Moss Hughes’ partner, Bryony Nicholson, walked 18 miles from her home in the village of Afonwen on the Llyn Peninsula to the charity’s Caernarfon airbase earlier this year.

She was joined by family and friends, and Bryony and Huw’s three-year-old daughter, Alys-Non Hughes, joined the family for the last part of the walk.

This raised £3,314 for the charity that fought to save Huw’s life.

Huw, 25, died in 2018 following a motorcycle accident. Alys-Non was just six months old.

The plasterer and weight-lifting champion was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital with life threatening injuries. He sadly passed away a few days later, surrounded by his family.

Huw’s family is grateful to the Wales Air Ambulance medics for the treatment they gave to him following his accident. Every year since his tragic death they have raised money for the Wales Air Ambulance in his memory.

To date they’ve raised an incredible £8,500.

Bryony said: “The walk was really good, although we had showers. Alys was excited to join us for the last part of the walk and we were met by family at the end of the walk.

“I was so happy. We were amazed with the money that was raised, it is really good.

“We never thought we’d raise that amount. I want it to go towards helping others.

“The support we’ve received from family and friends has been amazing, especially from Huw’s mum.”

In December 2020, the charity achieved its aim of operating a 24/7 service. Wales now has access to the service’s emergency department-standard critical care around the clock. To keep the helicopters in the air, the charity needs to raise £8 million every year.

Alwyn Jones, Wales Air Ambulance community fundraising coordinator, said: “It is impossible to imagine the pain and sadness that the family has gone through since losing Huw.

“Thank you so much to Bryony, Alys-Non and their family and friends for their continued support for the Wales Air Ambulance.

“They’ve raised an amazing £8,500 in memory of Huw. ”

Bryony is hoping to do more fundraising in the future, especially as it will be something that Alys can look forward to doing in memory of her father.
