FRIENDS and family of a Nefyn baby who died from a rare condition have raised £15,000 to help relatives of other sick children.

After Efan Evans tragically died at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in December 2012, aged just 20 months, his family has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

The toddler suffered from a rare condition which only affects a few people in the UK, called Surfactant Deficiency Protein C, which hit his lungs.

During his stay in hospital, the Evans family stayed in the nearby Ronald McDonald House, an accommodation facility for relatives of severely sick children.

The living quarters gave a degree of comfort to the family during their most trying time so, in order to help other people in similar situations, Efan’s relations banded together to sponsor a room at the housing charity.

Last year Bethan Wyn Evans, Efan’s mother, and a group of supporters took on the Great Manchester Run and raised a phenomenal £14,000. This year Bethan took on the gruelling 10k challenge, again joined by her daughters, as well as her friends this time, in a bid to push the pot over £15,000 and sponsor ‘Efan’s Room’ for a whole nine years.

The participants running in Efan’s memory all ran different distances but all raised money to help families in need.

Efan’s three-year-old sister Beca did the children’s mini fun-run, whilst 12-year-old Elan took on the junior run with her friends and two-year-old Ywain supported from the sideline.

Despite high temperatures on race day, 20 May, everyone completed their challenges, even though Bethan admitted to not enjoying the heat!

Explaining her fund-raising challenge, she said: “In 2017 Ronald McDonald House, Manchester asked if we could re-sponsor Efan’s room by raising £5,000.

“The house and room means a lot to us as a family as we were fortunate enough to stay there when Efan was poorly at RMCH."
