The family of an Aberystwyth Town FC legend will walk 70 miles in four days to help raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and mark what would have been her late husband’s 70th birthday.

Margaret Williams and her sons Owain and Sion will start their challenge on 8 March after deciding she wanted to do something to celebrate David Williams, known as Dias after a famous Brazilian player, and one of Aberystwyth’s greatest players.

Dias, who has a stand at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue named after him, passed away in November 1988 after a battle with cancer and to mark what would have been his 70th birthday on 11 March, the family set a target of raising £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

They will walk 70 miles visiting clubs where her husband played, with the first leg taking place between Pontrhydfendigaid, where Dias played his first game at the age of 14, and Aberystwyth with the family arriving at Park Avenue before the Seasiders take on Carmarthen.

She will then walk between Machynlleth Hospital and Llanidloes on Saturday, 9 March, with the leg on Sunday, 10 March taking place between Pontrhydfendigaid and Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, and the final leg on Monday, 11 March seeing the fundraisers walk from Lampeter Rugby Club to Pontrhydfendigaid.

A JustGiving page has been set up by the fundraisers with a statement about why they had decided to take on the challenge.
