ABERYSTWYTH Castle will not join other Welsh castles in being illuminated red in support of the national football team competing in Euro 2016.
The Welsh Government economy and infrastructure minister, Ken Skates, announced last week that key Welsh landmarks, including iconic castles, would “see red” for the entirety of the Wales football team’s involvement in Euro 2016 in France, in recognition of the team’s success in reaching a major football tournament for the first time in 58 years.
But questions have been asked after the list of sites to be illuminated red did not include any in Ceredigion or mid Wales.
The Cambrian News asked the Welsh Government this week why no sites in Ceredigion or mid Wales were included in the list, and they said it was not possible to light up every castle in Wales because not all are fitted with appropriate lighting.
Mr Skates told the Cambrian News: “To celebrate Wales’ massive achievement and involvement with Euro 2016 we are illuminating as many directly managed Cadw castles as possible across the country.
“We have made every effort to get a good mix of locations, with key sites in north, south, east and west Wales being lit up in red.
“However, it has not been possible to illuminate every castle in Wales because some are not fitted with the appropriate lighting equipment.”
Ceredigion County Council, which manages Aberystwyth Castle, told the Cambrian News they weren’t asked by the Welsh Government whether they had any sites which could be illuminated.
