COLEG Meirion-Dwyfor students have enjoyed meeting a Welsh acting legend.
Twin Town, Notting Hill, and The Amazing Spider-man actor Rhys Ifans met with a lucky group of north Wales students in Caernarfon last week, in what was his first appearance as Into Film Cymru’s newest ambassador, as part of celebrations marking the grand opening of Galeri’s new £4m cinema.
Rhys Ifans, who is currently filming Berlin Station in Budapest, flew in especially for the celebrations, spending the morning of Friday, 21 September chatting about the power of film to over 100 local young people from Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones, Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Ysgol Tryfan, Ysgol David Hughes and Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen.
Rhys joins a trio of Welsh ambassadors, including recent Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, actor Michael Sheen, and director Celyn Jones.
The support of such established members of the film community, enables Into Film to provide children and young people across the UK with the opportunity to establish a meaningful and long-lasting relationship with film, both as an art form and a potential career.
Non Stevens, head of Into Film Cymru, said: “We’re delighted that Rhys has agreed to become our newest ambassador, and it seems all the more fitting given that Galeri is today opening its new £4m cinema, which will mean more and more children and young people across north-west Wales will have the opportunity to learn through film.
“Rhys’ obvious love for film is infectious and he has a real gift for engaging young people in a really meaningful way.
“He is a fantastic advocate for us and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board.”
