FIREFIGHTERS were called to lift a man over the roof of an Aberystwyth pub and into an ambulance after he collapsed in his home last night.

The Cambrian News understands that John Morris, owner of the New Station Cafe and Aber Fishing Tackle Shop on Terrace Road, became unwell in his home above the shop at around 6pm on Thursday and that two ambulances, two fire crews and a three police vehicles were in attendance.

Kevin Hughes, manager of the fishing tackle shop, said he hadn’t heard from John or news of his condition, but was aware that he was conscious when he was taken away by paramedics.

“As far as I am aware, he was conscious and alright but they won’t tell me exactly because I’m not family,” said Mr Hughes.

“All I know is that he collapsed upstairs and they couldn’t get him down for some reason so had to take him over the roof of the Vale.”

Unable to evacuate Mr Morris, fire crews used a telescopic ladder with a platform to lift Mr Morris from a first floor flat roof at the back of his property, over the Vale of Rheidol pub roof and into a waiting ambulance.

Vale of Rheidol pub licensee, Donna Valentine said the whole operation took a around two hours and wished Mr Morris well.A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "On Thursday evening at 5.53pm, Aberystwyth crews assisted the ambulance at an incident on Terrace Road, Aberystwyth."The incident involved 1 casualty who had collapsed in his flat. "However, due to the narrowness of the stairway the ambulance crew were concerned about the welfare of the casualty in safely conveying him to the ambulance."
