CARDIGAN firefighters are taking part in a 12-mile sponsored walk wearing 18kg of full fire kit in aid of a two-year-old girl battling cancer.
Eliza Donnelly was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma — a rare cancer of specialised nerve cells — in July and underwent intensive chemotherapy at the Children’s Hospital, Cardiff.
Eliza’s mum and dad, Robin and Maya, have reached almost half of their £60,000 fund-raising target, which they say would allow them to give Eliza treatments which are not available on the NHS, and would give her the best chance of survival.
Robin and Maya, from Newport, Pembrokeshire, are looking into specialist treatment in Germany that can offer post-chemotherapy immune-building treatment, as well as new treatments available in the USA, and are using a specialist diet, supplements and equipment to help Eliza’s immune system fight the cancer and reduce the effects of the chemotherapy.
Cardigan Fire Station have announced they are to take on a gruelling sponsored walk wearing their full firefighting gear, including breathing apparatus, with a combined weight of 18kg, from Newport to Cardigan, on Saturday, 12 November.
