A PHENOMENON which saw thousands of sprats washed up on Aberystwyth south beach could mean it will be a good time to spot dolphins off the coast, marine experts have said.

It was reported in the Cambrian News that the small fish were washed up on south beach after a feeding frenzy, with large shoals of mackerel pushing its prey closer to the shoreline.

Local fishermen enjoyed a bumper haul, with anglers reporting the sea “boiling with fish” and even amateur fishermen able to catch dozens of mackerel.

Natural Resources Wales said the site of the washed-up fish was “no cause for concern” – after similar incidents were reported along Cardigan Bay.

NRW experts said it was a natural phenomenon caused by mackerel chasing sprats in calm seas – and could lead to more dolphins being visible from the shore as they in turn hunt the mackerel.
