PEOPLE living in Quay Parade, near Aberaeron harbour should have floodgates fitted to help keep seawater at bay, town councillors have been told.
Commenting on the recent tidal surge which saw the upper part of Quay Parade flooded, Cllr Elizabeth Evans suggested floodgates were “essential” for householders.
“There was a lot of over-tipping on the quay,” she reported. “I had knocked on all the doors along Quay Parade on the Sunday night to check that everyone was aware.
“I am now urging residents to get floodgates in because they add that extra bit of assurance.
“Flood doors in the top part of Quay Parade are most definitely needed and I have asked Natural Resources Wales whether they can provide such preventative measures as a one-off initiative.
“Flood doors are essential – there are some elderly residents down there.”
Cllr Evans added that Ceredigion County Council had changed its policy regarding the provision of sandbags.
“In the past they would automatically put out sandbags,” she said. “From now on sandbags will only be distributed when there is an actual flood warning which is obviously another thing residents have to be aware of.
“There were two council lorries with sandbags down by the quay at 5pm on Sunday.
“Fair play to those council workmen: they were still there and getting very wet on the Monday morning.”
