A former Royal Welch Fusilier from Dolgellau will take part in an ambitious fundraising project launched in Cardiff in aid of Blind Veterans UK.

Dale Williams, ex 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh Fusiliers and The Royal Welsh, will be part of a team that will attempt to complete a string of challenging ventures.

The brainchild of Captain (Retired) Colin Jones MBE from Aberystwyth, the three-year fundraising campaign was launched in the Welsh Capital last week alongside Wales rugby captain and British and Irish Lion, Ryan Jones.

The first event on 5 September will see a team from the Royal Welch, accompanied by Ryan Jones, attempt to run from Maindy Barracks in Cardiff to Hightown Barracks in Wrexham by 3pm the following day.

The event will consist of four runners completing 33.5 miles each of a total 134 miles.

The relay challenge is the first part of a three-year fundraising campaign in aid of Blind Veterans UK, with other challenges seeing the team take on blindfolded ascents of Pen-y-Fan and Snowdon and a blindfolded walk from Blind Veterans UK’s Llandudno Centre to Hightown Barracks, Wrexham.

Colin said: “In September 2020 we aim to retrace some of Captain Stephen Healey’s sponsored blindfolded walk from Llandudno to Wrexham.

“Before being tragically killed in action during an operational tour of Afghanistan in 2012, Stephen was committed to supporting Blind Veterans UK after the charity supported one of his men, Fusilier Shaun Stocker, whose sight was damaged after stepping on an IED in April 2010.”
