Two friendship benches have been unveiled in Criccieth.

The benches, on the Maes and Marine Terrace, are part of the ‘Bridging the Generations’ project at Gwynedd Council.

Artist and councillor Ffion Gwyn was commissioned by Gwynedd Council to carry out the work and the benches were painted by a group of art students at the Pwllheli campus of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.

The town council chose two benches that needed renovating and these were repaired by students Josie Harris, Amber Matthews, Sophie Wynne Williams, Celyn Annwyl Dobson, Owain Llywelyn, Deio Bryn, Dyfan Rhys Jones, Elin Haf Williams, Jasmine Burnett and Catrin Enlli Jones.

The benches were designed by Ffion Gwyn based on stories, place names and local history and the community was consulted in an online event in March.

The design of the bench on the Maes is based on the history of the fairs which have been held in Criccieth for many centuries.

The bench on Marine Terrace was based on the many stories found about characters and stories associated with the beaches, cliffs and paths that stretch from the river Dwyfor to Black Rock.

Cllr Sian Williams, chair of the town council, said: “Criccieth Town Council was delighted to have been chosen as one of four to refurbish benches under the Friendships Benches scheme by Gwynedd Council. The scheme follows a national model and the benches welcome people of all ages to sit together and share a conversation."
