Madam,

I feel I must reply to your article regarding the future of Dolgellau’s Eldon Square.

The picture on the front of the paper exemplifies the problem neatly. Eldon Square could, and should, be a mecca for visitors and locals alike. Instead it is choked with traffic.

There is no need for the bus terminal to be in the square, sometimes up to six buses can be there, stationary, all with their engines running and traffic backed up on all the approaching roads.

The congestion, fumes and noises can be, quite simply, horrendous. However it the scaremongering that I most object to. There is not, and never has been, a plan to stop the buses stopping in the square; the proposal is simply to retain the bus stop but move the terminus away.

There is a counter-petition to the one mentioned which is adamant that something needs to be done to improve the situation. The old Dolgellau argument that ‘they have always been there’ simply does not hold water any more.

Yours etc,

Dr Peter Barnes, Cader Road, Dolgellau.
