A mental health advocate from Fairbourne is embarking on another endeavour to raise money for mental health charity CALM, after having previously raised £7,000 for charity.

Michelle Lloyd, 34, is completing the CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) Lost Hours walk at 11pm on Saturday, 26 October, aiming to help “normalise” conversation around mental health and “smash the silence around” male suicide.

The Lost Hours Walk is open to everyone, as there are alternative routes depending on the participant’s physical capabilities.

Participants can either walk the full 20-mile route, which goes from Greenwich to Big Ben, or the shorter 10-mile route, from Greenwich to the Oval.

CALM suggests a £150 fundraising minimum, however, the website also states that this is only a guideline as it is the “taking part” that counts.

Michelle has so far raised £230 of her £250 target.

Michelle has become well known for her advocacy around the issue of mental health, having previously raised £4,500 through MIND’s 3000’s Hike and £2,500 for CALM’s South Coast Challenge.

She has also been contacted by Barack Obama’s Surgeon General to contribute to a book on mental health and, in particular, loneliness. The book is due to be published next year.

Michelle has been open about her motivation for her activism, which stems from her own struggles with mental health.

Her successful blog You Don’t Look Depressed has created a space for Michelle to encourage discussions around the traditionally taboo subject.

“I feel very passionate about trying to help other who may be feeling similar and have found that hundreds of people have been in touch with me off the back of various articles,” she said.

“I wanted to do my bit to help the work CALM do in not only supporting people who are living miserably and contemplating suicide with their helpline, but in the great work they do in getting people talking and breaking down those difficult barriers that stop men in particular talking about their emotions and how they’re feeling.”
