Barmouth Bridge could be under threat again just three years after tens of thousands of people fought to protect it.
In 2015, over 150 cyclists and walkers met at Barmouth Bridge in a protest against potential plans to close it as the council sought to save £9 million from its budget.
An online petition against the proposals attracted more than 42,000 signatures and support from across the world.
The future of the iconic bridge, which celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, is once again under consideration as Gwynedd Council attempts to bridge a £13 million funding gap.
Other services potentially under threat include further closures/transfers of public toilets and play parks, discontinuing funding to day care centres, cutting jobs, maintaining fewer footpaths, and ending library services for schools.
Barmouth Viaduct carries the Cambrian Coast rail link between Machynlleth and Pwllheli and is owned by Network Rail.
It also has a wooden walkway running parallel which is popular with pedestrians and cyclists as part of the Wales Coastal Path.
Currently the council pays Network Rail a maintenance grant of £35,000 a year and this appears on the list of potential cuts to be considered by Gwynedd Council’s cabinet next Tuesday (18 December).
