Madam,

We have reached the end of the academic year and there is no indication that the Welsh language courses for adults, currently provided by Ceredigion County Council, will continue next year. For adults who have moved into Wales, the provision of opportunities to learn the language have been enshrined in Welsh language policies across the country and are of special importance in the Welsh heartlands such as Ceredigion.

However, neither the tutors employed by Ceredigion council, nor it seems the office co-ordinating this provision, have any information as to their personal future let alone the future of the many locally-based classes. There is a danger that of necessity many of these tutors will seek other employment and would not be available should, at the 13th hour, information arrive regarding the continuance of Welsh for Adults.

Equally many of the students themselves may well disappear, planning and finding alternatives for their time and not return to Welsh lessons should they be reinstated .This is a deplorable situation and should be a cause for great concern to all who value the language.

I apologise for not, as a student who was attending one of the classes in Llanfair Clydogau, writing this in Welsh, but am aware that my command of the language is not sufficient to make the above points unambiguously.

Yours etc
