FAMILY and friends of the late former secretary and chairman of Aberystwyth Cricket Club gathered to watch a game in his memory and scatter his ashes on Sunday.

A cricket match was played on Sunday, 14 August, in memory of the late Dr Richard Kemp, who passed away in 2014 and left a generous donation to the club in his will, along with the request that his ashes were scattered at the club’s playing ground, Y Geufron.

Following the match, Dr Kemp’s niece, Michelle, and two great nephews, Ethan and Isaac, and club members, former players, and former colleagues of Dr Kemp at Aberystwyth University zoology department, heard a poignant tribute from the club chairman, and friend of 50 years, Robin Varley.

Dr Kemp was also a leading figure in the Welsh Cricket Association, who, in partnership with the late Tom Cartwright, developed a coaching structure that is still in place across Wales today.

The club had commissioned a seat to commemorate Dr Kemp’s contribution to the club and to Welsh cricket in general. This has been placed near to a copper beech tree planted over 20 years ago at his request.
