A community group in Tre’r-ddôl is buzzing after scooping a national prize.

The group of volunteer gardeners at Cletwr have been named the September winners of the Pollin-8 national competition, run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

The trust said: “Congratulations to our latest Pollin-8 competition winner, Cletwr Gardening Group (Grwp Garddio Cletwr) from Tre’r-ddôl.

“September’s theme was Community Gardening, and we loved this ‘buzzing’ hub for both bumblebees and people.

“Thank you Cletwr for creating a haven for bumblebees - including making sure there’s lots of pollen and nectar on offer this autumn - and for empowering even more people in your community!”

The team at Cletwr said: “Cletwr is a not-for-profit community shop and cafe, and our garden group volunteers have ensured that there is plenty on the menu for pollinating insects too, including bumblebees of course!

“We have a wildflower patch in one corner of the car park, created with native plug plants and some that had self-seeded; the bumblebees love it as we have nectar and pollen producing plants flowering in it from March to October. It is cut once a year after all the plants have finished flowering and set seed.

“We have several flower and shrub borders as well as containers with lots of forage for bumblebees in them in all seasons.

“At the moment they are feasting on the sea of various asters, helianthus and borage which are south-facing so the bees can take advantage of the late afternoon sunshine to forage. Especially earlier in the year, the herb planter and soft fruit border are also enormously popular with bumblebees.

“We have a bug hotel where bumblebees have been seen resting and a plant stand where donated pollinator friendly plants are offered for a small donation, so bumblebees should find much to delight them in customers’ gardens too!”
