A GLASS recycling collection could be introduced across Ceredigion earlier than expected if a trial set to be launched in the Cardigan area is a success, it has been revealed.

A pilot scheme for a new fortnightly kerbside glass collection will see around 850 households in north Cardigan and Penparc take part in the trial to see if it is feasible.

The pilot, which will see the council use Pembrokeshire County Council vehicles initially, is the first step to introducing a glass collection across the county.

But highways strategic director Huw Morgan said that while the pilot scheme is for an initial six-month period, it will be reviewed after three months and if it is judged successful could be rolled out across the whole county shortly afterwards.

Cllr Alun Williams, the Cabinet member for waste, said while the authority’s recycling services are highly regarded, many residents had asked for a glass collection service to be introduced.

He said: “This paper is hopefully the first step in seeing that. I’m very hopeful the pilot will be a success and we can look forward to introducing a kerbside glass collection.”

Councillors welcomed the possible introduction of a new collection after saying that community bottle collection points were often completely full.
