SUPPORT from all over the world is coming in ahead of the final push to purchase a community pub.
Earlier this year, a community committee was set up to “breath fresh life into Nefyn” by taking over the closed down pub ‘The Sportsman/Tafarn yr Heliwr’ and reopening it as a community hub.
The committee ‘Tafarn yr Heliwr Cyf’ aims to raise around £160,000 to create a “much-needed social space that the whole community can use, where everyone is welcome”.
Not only would the pub be brought back to life, the group hopes the building could also provide accommodation for visitors, a restaurant, space for music and events, and a cosy hub for community groups.
In a bid to raise money, the group is offering shares in the building at £50 a share and individuals and companies are purchasing the unique offerings in droves.
The committee is remaining tight-lipped over how much money has been raised so far but will announce the figure after the campaign ends at the end of the week.
Speaking on Monday, Bethan Wyn Evans, a driving force behind the project, said: “There are just days to go until our share offer closes on 30 June.
“It has been a busy few days, lots of last-minute buying!
“The committee has been busy on social media and distributing leaflets, posters and banners locally.
“Lots of people are buying shares as an “unusual and unique” gift, others have been ‘clubbing’ together with family or friends to be able to buy a share.
“People are able to set up a standing order to spread payments and make them more affordable too.
“It’s an exciting venture, enabling the community and supporters from further afield to pull together to secure the purchase of a historic pub for the community.”
The Tafarn yr Heliwr Facebook group has received dozens of videos and goodwill messages, from across the region and even as far as Australia, which are posted every day.
“The venture has been set up as a Community Benefit Society. This ensures the venture is a ‘not for profit’ business and that any profit it makes is invested back into the business and/or the community,” continued Bethan.
“The venture will secure jobs in Nefyn and bring people together.
“It’s not too late for people to buy shares.”
