The floor of a Grade I listed Llanbadarn church has been “transformed” thanks to a grant which saw work completed last week.

Following a grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund in early 2018, the first week of April saw extensive work taking place at St Padarn’s Church to renovate and repair the glass mosaic floor under the tower crossing.

The work was undertaken by a specialist firm, the Mosaic Restoration Company from Northampton.

Project manager at the church, Brian Wiley, said the “end result has been most successful and rewarding to see”.

The floor was designed by Jesse Rust of Battersea, London, and laid as part of a major repair and restoration of the church in the 1860s and ’70s, carried out by J P Seddon, of London - a famous Gothic church architect at that time.

Seddon was also the architect responsible for the design and construction of the Old College building on the seafront during the same time period.

Over the past 130 years of use as a public thoroughfare within the church, the floor colouring had deteriorated due to daily wear and tear that led to some of the small glass pieces becoming loose, creating a number of holes in the intricate patterns.

Mr Wiley said the new floor was looking “incredible” and that the work had “secured the future” of the building.
