AN INSPIRATIONAL grandmother-of-two has won gold in a gruelling marathon.

Dr Marjorie Griffiths, 70, came in first place in the over-70s category at the recent Snowdonia Marathon.

It was Dr Griffiths’ 16th full marathon and just one of a series of foot races that the former biology teacher at Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn has completed this year.

Several weeks ago, she was also awarded a bronze medal after placing third in the over-70s category in the Cardiff half marathon.

However Dr Griffiths, who now lives in Aberyswyth, is not finished yet.

“I like running, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t like it,” Dr Griffiths told the Cambrian News.

“I started running about 40 years ago when I was a teacher and a parent… it was the only way for me to get some peace.

“I used to go on the cross country runs in Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn too, but that was mainly to make sure the students hadn’t just stopped halfway through the course.”

Over the years Dr Griffiths has raised hundreds of pounds for Alzheimer’s charity, a condition which afflicted her father.

“One of my next races will be the Cambrian News 10k, I’m very much looking forward to it," she said.
